Postcards from Mississippi: The Blues Trail and Beyond

Mississippi postcards travel the Blues Trail from Tunica to Tupelo, the river towns of Natchez and Vicksburg, and the Gulf Coast at Biloxi.

The short answer

Mississippi files its postcards along three lines: the Mississippi Blues Trail through the Delta and the hill country, the river towns of Natchez and Vicksburg, and the Gulf Coast at Biloxi and Gulf Islands Seashore. Every stop links to its own place page, where the cards filed for it are gathered.

The Delta and the Blues Trail

The Blues Trail is Mississippi's own road: a state-spanning marker route that traces the music born in the cotton fields and juke joints of the Delta. In the atlas it sits alongside the towns that carry the story — Tupelo, Corinth, and Hattiesburg — and a postcard of the trail is a card of the whole state in one image.

Jackson and the middle of the state

The capital, Jackson, anchors the center of the map, close to Leroy Percy State Park and the Mississippi Petrified Forest. North and east of it, the land lifts into the hills around Tishomingo State Park and the Natchez Trace parkway, where the Trace State Park takes its name from the old road.

The river towns

Along the Mississippi River, Natchez keeps its antebellum streets and the Natchez National Historical Park, while Vicksburg Battlefield holds the Civil War ground. Emerald Mound and Shiloh National Military Park carry the older and harder histories, and Clark Creek and Chalk Mine Hollow the natural ones.

The Gulf Coast

The state's coast is its own small route: Biloxi and Biloxi Beach, Gulfport, Ocean Springs, and the barrier islands of Gulf Islands Seashore. Lighthouses, live oaks, and white sand make it the most postcarded corner of Mississippi — and the easiest place to start a state collection.

Planning a Mississippi postcard route

The natural tour runs north to south: Tupelo and Corinth in the hill country, down through Jackson and the Delta trail towns, west to Natchez and Vicksburg on the river, then south to the coast at Biloxi. The Mississippi route shows every design currently filed under the state, and each place page stands alone if you only want one card.

What is the Mississippi Blues Trail?

The Mississippi Blues Trail is a marker route across the state that commemorates the people and places behind blues music. The atlas files its postcard under its own place page, with the surrounding towns on the Mississippi route.

How many postcard designs does Mississippi have in the atlas?

Mississippi currently carries a design for every place on its route — from Tupelo and Jackson to Natchez, Vicksburg, and the Gulf Coast towns. The Mississippi route lists them all with current counts.
